Plug, a maritime charging and shore power company, achieved a significant breakthrough on August 14 by connecting five cruise vessels to its shore power facilities simultaneously according to a statement.

The operation, conducted at the Norwegian ports of Bergen and Aalesund, represents a key step in reducing emissions within the maritime industry, the company said.

In Bergen, three ships, theAIDAperla, Viking Neptune, and Amadea, were hooked up to Plug’s shore power installations.

Simultaneously, in Aalesund, the AIDAprima and MSC Euribia received power from similar setups.

During peak docking, Plug delivered nearly 26,000 kW of clean energy, marking a substantial reduction in fossil fuel use.

Plug’s installations in Bergen and Aalesund have a combined capacity of 80 MVA, capable of simultaneously serving up to five cruise vessels. In 2024, the company anticipates delivering over 25 million kWh of clean energy through these facilities.

The ships consumed approximately 160 MWh of clean energy during their docking, which prevented the emission of around 128 tonns of CO2.
