Havila Voyages has taken delivery of its first ship, Havila Capella, which is due to start operating along the Norwegian coast on 1 December.

The line plans to welcome a further three ships to the fleet. These will be “designed to be the most environmentally friendly ships to operate from Bergen to Kirkenes”, Havila Voyages stated.

The ships will be fitted with battery packs, enabling them to sail through fjords and other vulnerable areas for up to four hours emission and noise free, according to the line. The batteries will then be charged in the numerous ports along the route, using clean hydropower.

They will also energy generated from surplus heat, energy monitoring systems and liquefied natural gas.

Havila Capella will feature an observation lounge with a glass roof, deck and promenade areas, as well as two restaurants, all in a “modern and stylish Nordic design that reflects Norwegian landscapes and uses natural materials”.

Havila Voyages CEO Bent Martini said: “We have been looking forward to this day for many months and are delighted to have taken delivery of our first ship.

“Launching a brand-new shipping company is a very special event to be part of, especially given this is the largest investment in tourism we have seen along the Norwegian coast.

“We can’t wait to share information about Capella, so on the journey from Turkey to Norway we will post movies and photos on social media, giving a sneak preview of the ship and life on board.”

The second ship is due to be delivered in January 2022, with two further ships arriving in the summer of 2022.

The ships will operate as part of a 10-year contract with the Norwegian government to sail the coastal route from Bergen to Kirkenes.

The 12-day voyage will take in 34 coastal ports, pass through four UNESCO heritage sites and cross the Arctic Circle twice.
