Holland America Line was founded in 1873 and possesses a long and varied history, evolving over the years to meet new demand.
From its roots as a Dutch shipping and passenger line that transported primarily immigrants, including Albert Einstein, to North America for a new life, the line has transformed into a premium cruise line operating a fleet of five-star, contemporary ships.
Holland America Line is looking ahead with positivity to its 150th anniversary and is planning to innovate further to further solidify itself as a favourite among international travellers.
Holland America Line’s premium product
HAL has created a new pricing programme called ‘Have it All’, which is a premium package for drinks, speciality dining, shore excursions and wifi.
This means that with one simple cruise fare, guests will receive these four inclusions, saving 50 per cent (or more) on these extras when compared to buying them separately.
As a result, HAL still retains its premium value, but has become more inclusive in its cruise fare, providing superb value for money.
Expanding the fleet
HAL recently welcomed Rotterdam to the fleet, providing yet another modern ship for guests to travel on.
The launch of the ship – which is ideal for art lovers – followed the successful debuts of Koningsdam in 2016 and Nieuw Statendam in 2018.
Following an October 12-night inaugural transatlantic voyage from the city of Rotterdam, the ship will spend the winter cruising the Caribbean, before returning to Europe in April 2022.
Visiting hidden Caribbean gems with Holland America Line
HAL specialises in longer and leisurely itineraries in the Caribbean, with Rotterdam – alongside several of her sister ships – cruising the region.
Travel agents should highlight how the line features itineraries that call into less-visited islands such as Curacao, and Aruba.
A major selling point is the line’s private island, Half Moon Cay, where a day is spent on every Caribbean cruise. HAL purchased this island in 1997 and it features a stingray lagoon, lobster shack and horse riding trails set on a peaceful white sand beach.
Only two per cent of Half Moon Cay has been developed, while the rest is a protected bird sanctuary.
Unique Alaskan experiences
HAL will celebrate 75 years of exploring Alaska in 2022, proving that it is the true Alaska expert.
The line offers more sailings to the state than any other premium line, calling into Glacier Bay National Park, Denali National Park, and the Inside Passage.
Travel agents should highlight HAL’s tour to the remote Yukon Territory, which is an experience unique to the line.
