INTRODUCTION

The Greek island of Corfu, the Grand Lady of the Ionian Sea, is known as one of the most scenic of the Greek Islands thanks to its mountainous terrain and greenery.

Corfu Town, the capital, is located on the east coast, and here passengers will find fortresses and Spianada Square, one of the largest public squares in the Balkans.

Of course, a visit to Corfu wouldn’t be complete without sampling the beaches, which offer countless opportunities to sit back, relax and enjoy the warm glow of wall-to-wall sunshine. Or, for those who enjoy a more energetic form of relaxation, there are also water sports offered on many beaches.

PORT VIEW

Ships dock at New Port, which has a large duty-free shop, and taxis are available outside the terminal.

Buses also depart from the port to the capital, although it is possible to walk to the old town – a UNESCO World Heritage site – in around half an hour.

NEED TO KNOW

Temperatures in the 30s are common during the summer. A hop-on, hop-off bus operates around Corfu Town, although it can also be done on foot. Siesta time is from 3pm and 5pm.

Visitors should watch out when crossing roads, as cars do tend to appear out of nowhere.

The currency in Corfu is the Euro.

WHAT WE LOVE

Old Town: Spianada Square should be one of the first ports of call for any traveller and is a key part of why the Old Town was listed as a UNESCO site. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants here for refuelling. The Andivouniótissa (Byzantine) Museum is known for its range of artefacts from the 15th to 18th centuries. The neoclassical Ionian Parliament building is another attraction close to Spianada Square.

The Corfu Trail: Get those walking shoes on and tackle the Corfu Trail. Established in 2001, this walking tour covers 136 miles and takes in one end of the island to the other. Obviously, it’s far too long for any day passengers to attempt, but a partial attempt is worth it in order to take in the stunning scenery. Yellow signposts are dotted around to guide walkers.

Diving: Corfu is also one of the best places in Greece for scuba diving, particularly the dive sites around Paleokastrítsa, Othoní, and the Paxí islets. Agní Reef, on the north-east coast, has a 40-metre deep wreck.

Corfu Museum of Asian Art: Located in the central part of the Palace of St Michael & St George, here guests will find artefacts ranging from prehistoric bronzes to onyx and ivory. The museum is split into sections: Chinese ceramics; India; and the Japanese area, complete with exhibits of samurai armour.

Achillion Palace: The palace, built in the 1890s, is about 12km south of Corfu Town and was designed for the Austrian empress Elizabeth, who was the niece of King Otto of Greece.
