Viking has cancelled its scheduled visits to Santorini in February due to ongoing seismic activity on the Greek island.

According to a report by Arxipelagos, the Viking Star was set to visit the destination twice this month, with calls scheduled for Feb. 10 and Feb. 15.

With Santorini declaring a state of emergency and tourist areas closed for precautionary reasons, Viking was forced to cancel the arrivals.

According to the maritime news website, the ship was set to open the 2025 cruise season on the island, which has been suffering from a series of consecutive earthquakes.

Offering winter cruises in the Aegean and the Mediterranean, the Viking Star replaced its visits to Santorini with calls to Souda on the Greek island of Crete.

Continuing its season in the region, the 930-guest vessel is now scheduled to open the cruise season in Santorini in March.

Offering a 14-night cruise that sails between Civitavecchia and Piraeus, the Viking Star is set to visit Santorini on Mar. 11, 2025.

A popular cruise destination in Greece, Santorini was recently in the spotlight due to newly imposed visiting restrictions.

At least three cruise lines rerouted their ships after the Greek government announced plans to introduce a tax for cruise ship guests.

Said to be aimed at combating over-tourism in more sensitive destinations, including Santorini and Mykonos, the measure was first announced in September 2024.

AIDA Cruises was the latest cruise line to announce plans to replace calls to Santorini from part of its itineraries.

Earlier this year, the brand changed the 2025 schedule of the AIDAblu to replace the destination with other ports of call in Greece.

Last October, Costa Cruises decided to cancel all the planned visits to Santorini scheduled for the Costa Fascinosa in 2025.

Princess Cruises made similar changes earlier this year, removing visits to the Greek island from the 2025 itineraries of the Sun Princess.
